Product DescriptionOne of my favorite spots in Hong Kong is the Captain’s Bar at the Mandarin Hotel. Leather, wood paneling, subdued lights…could be an English men’s club.
Perfect decompression chamber.
On my last visit, I was having a nightcap a few stools down from a well-known director who was reading a script. At closing time, he pulled out a kind of credit card I’d never actually seen before. Not green, or gold, or platinum, no; it was black.
The rumors were true, then. There really was a black Amex card so exclusive (less than 10,000 issued worldwide) that most people had never even heard of its existence.
The gent noticed my curiosity; he looked over his wire-rimmed glasses and gave me a weary smile.
“Believe me,” he said, “you don’t ask for these things; they just decide to send them to you.”
This is the jacket he had on.

Voted 5/5 | so far! O.K. so I just bought this thing, but when doing a comparison against other jackets I tried on, I liked this one best. Fit, weight and ease of movement were all top-notch! The hood fits well over a helmet and the one handed manipulation does so accordingly. I can't wait for the weather to turn nasty so I can get out in this on some ice. I will report back on it's performance once field tested.
Edit: O.K., so I've finally been out and used this jacket on a winter(ish) climb of Kelso Ridge on Torrey's Peak (14,267') on November 24th, 2007. The jacket performed flawlessly! Very light and completely wind proof...it was very windy on the ridge and summit. I spilled water on myself while drinking and it just rolled right off the jacket. The pockets were easily accessible while wearing a pack too. My only problem was the hood strap would catch on my helmet adjustment knob when the hood was up. I use a BD Half-Dome helmet. Easily solved though by tucking the hood strap down and out of the way when the hood is up. Great, great, great jacket!!!
Edit #2: Since the above posts, I've used the jacket ice and mixed climbing with a harness. As stated before, its still a phenomenal jacket! My movements were not restricted in the least while climbing M7 and WI3. The jacket breathed well during hard movements in very cold/windy weather. Even with a fleece underlayer and the jacket, the harness fit well and didn't bunch the jacket up at all. | | Posted Sep 25, 2007 6:28 pm |
