Product DescriptionThis is an external-frame pack. Its adjustable torso ranges from 14" to 23", and I use the upper part of that range. It weighs 6 lb, 13 oz, and has a listed capacity of 4900 cubic inches.
Kelty brought this out as a 50th anniversary remake of its original 1952 Super Tioga, priced right at $185. It won an editor's choice award from Backpacker magazine. However, it didn't seem to last very long and is no longer available new.
FeaturesThis is a big, external frame pack with a large top flap. Though based on a 1952 design, it has a modern suspension system, with adjustable hip, shoulder, suspension and chest straps.
It has a bunch of pockets and three internal compartments, making it easy to organizing things.

Voted 3/5 | Backpacker Magazine notes that "In terms of fit, the Super Tioga favors folks with long torsos and broad shoulders." That describes me, and the pack does fit me well - - if I'm not carrying too much.
Given its size (and reputation), I was surprised that this pack ceased to fit me very well when carrying more than about 50 pounds. The hip belt stops resting on the pelvis bone, even when cinched very tight, and slides around and down the hips.
The top of the frame has a forward-facing bump that hits the bottom of my neck in just the wrong place - - again, this is a problem when it's loaded up, but not when I have less than 50 pounds inside.
On the positive side, the pack breathes really well in back, with good airflow between my back and the pack. That's the point of an external frame, and this one delivers. | | Posted Aug 7, 2007 2:58 pm |
