Voted 5/5 | Talk about a visual treat! The photographs are absolute breathtaking (some full page) depicting exactly why these are labeled “extreme” climbs as well as featuring the stunning natural scenery. But more than just pictures, the author provides a basic background on each type of climbing involved and, as to each of the 25 featured climbs, good detail on the climber or climbers involved and on the route.
The diversity of the climbing featured is in itself impressive: deep water soloing in Wales, ice climbing in Italy, big wall climbing in Patagonia and Yosemite, and big mountain climbing in the Himalayas and Pakastani Karakorum. Among memorable comments by the climbers, my favorite is one made by British climber Stevie Haston when he first sighted the route known as “X Files” in the Vallon de Villeille region in Italy: “The route is a dream or a nightmare.”
