Very dependable and reliable altimeter. I have owned my thommen altimeter now for ca. 15 years, and it's still as good as it was when it was new. BIG advantage: does not need batteries, since it is a mechanically working altimeter. Also, no problems with low temperatures. Only disadvantage: price

Reliable and precise. My Thommen is still working nice after 10 years of intensive use. It do not need any battery (that also means less problem with low temperature).
It looks less precise than the electronic altimeters, but in fact it is at least so precise. Its precision is 10 meters when the electronic ones often claim 5 meter. But 5 meters is their display precision when their measurement precision is less good!

I got the 15,000 ft version; a bit more sensitive and good enough for backpacking use but not for mountaineering.

Great except I had to send it in once for warranty repair; better track record than any other altimeter I have had. Bought mine back in 1984 and it still works.

NO BATTERIES! A little pricey but worth it.

I've owned my Thommen since 1975. Used it on Rainier, Hood, Mex Volcanoes, and generaly knocking around in smaller mountains. It's worked flawlessly. I really like the no battery aspect, the accuracy, and the fact that it doesn't need a satellite fix. What I really love about altimeters is that you can pinpoint your location on a trail in rough, wooded terrain where there's no chance of getting a compass bearing. Cool too, when someone asks how far it is to the top...

I have had a Thommen for over 20 years. While the digital altimeters have their advantages( And I own one), this tool is consistently accurate, easy to use and doesn't rely on batteries! The drawback is the price.
