The best feature of Google Earth is that its free. It offers high quality sattelite photos (in most places). The tilt feature is cool because you can see the heights of summits compared to the surrounding areas. You can also get driving directions from it which is pretty helpful. I use the "measure" tool to find out how far I rode my bike and according to my bike computer it's pretty accurate.

The coolest thing ever. Perfect for looking at trails, routes, or whatever. I use this to find hidden trails that otherwise would be impossible to find. Beware though; Google Earth has costed me hours and hours of time that I should have been spending doing homework. It's that addicting!

This is a great tool and should be on everyone's favorites. It's fast, user friendly, and has a lot of features. My only complaint is that there is no detail where you need it the most......the backcountry. The city areas are very detailed, yet the detail is limited in backcountry areas.

Definitely a very cool program. When you tilt it, quite a few mountains look like the pictures e.g. Shasta, OJI,

Doubletop. You can simulate your driving route by tilting the thing and following the highway. Also shows multitudes of restaurants etc. And yes it is FREE!. BTW write them and tell em to fix the Zermatt mountains and the Annapurna range.

Now with Mac support, but only for OSX v10.4. This is a nice nod toward the Mac community, but those of us with (slightly) older OSes will have to either upgrade or wait for the rumored 10.3 beta version to be released.

I like Google Earth. I use it along with other TOPO programs to get a good 3D view of planning routes for different peaks.

Normally something that is free isn't this nice! I'm a fan of just sitting and looking at places I'd like to go. I've gotten my family hooked on it too. I highly recommend it to anyone, not just those interested in mountaineering / hiking / etc. It's just fun to look at!

redsplashman23Importing Tracks

You can actually import tracks without having to purchase Google Earth Plus. You do though have to save your files and import them from using another program like Memory Map or DeLorme. They need to be saved as a .csv file. To Import the file go to File>Open on the Menu bar, then import your file. You can then see your tracks in 3D.

I am on Google Earth almost more then Summitpost (almost). Great software. However, only downside is that you need to watch for clouds on the program. Clouds made it really hard to decyfer a route up Mt. Silliman in the Sierra Nevada's.

You can go anywhere in the world and see terrain with incredible detail. It is free and easy to download. You can also use the trail planer to calculate distances.

Though the statement is pretty much true, I use Google Earth all the time. Sometimes reading a trail guide just isn't good enough, and most times the detail in Earth is good enough you can plot it out from there. Plus it's easy to transfer the data (KML), convert it to GPX (GPSBabel), and upload the tracks and waypoints to your GPS device. Wicked awesome.
